The international team trails USA 10-4 at the Presidents Cup after drawing 2-2 in Saturday’s foursome.
American pair Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas earned their third straight point, while Max Homa and Tony Finau also prevailed.
But Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama fought back for Team International, and KH Lee and Tom Kim held on to beat Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns.
The winning objective is 15½ points. There are four fourball matches to be played on Saturday, with 12 singles on Sunday.
Four-ball matches are underway in Quail Hollow, North Carolina. This is the 14th running of the biennial Ryder Cup-style match, and the United States leads 11-1 on aggregate with a game tied.
Spieth and Thomas have proven to be a formidable pair so far and were again in dominant form in the alternating shot quartets against South Korean Sungjae Im and Canadian Corey Conners, winning 4&3.
Australia’s Scott and Japan’s Matsuyama lost two of the first five holes to par Cameron Young and Collin Morikawa but won five successive holes from the ninth to take a three-hole lead they would not relinquish.
In the final match, Americans Finau and Homa never trailed against Si Woo Kim and Cam Davis as they cruised to a 4&3 win.
But Lee and Kim went through a tough match with world number one Scheffler and Burns. There was never more than a hole between the players until Kim made a par five-foot putt to claim the 16th and advance two with two to go, and they wrapped up a 2&1 win on the 17th.
Both teams have lost players to the controversial LIV Golf circuit, with the international team arguably feeling the pain more. Open champion and world number three Cameron Smith, Chilean Joaquin Niemann, Mexican Abraham Ancer, South African Louis Oosthuizen and Australian Marc Leishman are all missing.
The quintet are banned from playing, having opted to join Greg Norman’s Saudi-funded start-up, which has staged five of its eight invitational events scheduled so far in 2022.
Captain Trevor Immelman has been forced to name eight rookies to his 12-person international squad.
The Americans are without Dustin Johnson, who won all five of his matches in last year’s record Ryder Cup win over Europe at Whistling Straits.
Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka are other big winners who left the PGA Tour to join LIV, but the USA Presidents Cup squad still contains 10 of the world’s top 16 players.
