Would Liverpool have a chance to win the Champions League?
At first glance, it looks like Liverpool would have gotten one of the easier routes to the final. If they had beaten Atletico Madrid, Jurgen Klopp would have faced RB Leipzig.
Leipzig beat Tottenham Hotspur to get where they are, but they’re without star striker Timo Werner – who sealed a move to Chelsea and landed at Stamford Bridge when the window opened.
Liverpool vs Leipzig would have been an interesting game. Both teams like to put pressure, they like to play fast football but they do it in different formations. In many ways, Klopp vs Julian Nagelsmann would have been a true master-versus-apprentice game as the two Germans clashed.
You would have imagined the Reds’ chances of beating the Bundesliga team, although maybe if Adrian had missed that game.
Other than that, the traditional big guns are all left in the competition. Manchester City play Real Madrid so there will be a big knockout there, whereas you would think Juventus will beat Lyon (even though they are 1-0) while Barcelona and Bayern Munich are backed to pass.
Atalanta will likely lose to PSG, although the French Titans are rusty after seeing their national campaign scrapped and the Serie A side could stand a chance.
Back in the real world and Atletico will face Leipzig. It will be another training battle and Diego Simeone will be looking to do the same anti-football work he finished on Liverpool on two legs.
We have seen that Liverpool are good over two rounds in European competitions. With a break, as well as a Champions League and Premier League winning experience, this team will have backed each other up to add to their silverware collection.
As we have seen, knockout football can be hard to predict, but the history of this team is good and we would have been confident of another Champions League win.
