Portugal defender Nuno Mendes cut a gut-wrenching figure, leaving the pitch in tears after picking up an injury in their World Cup clash against Uruguay.
It’s unclear what the nature of the injury is to the left-back, who looked visibly emotional as he left the pitch.
Raphael Guerreiro replaced Mendes in the 42nd minute.
This is devastating news for the Paris Saint-Germain star, who suffered a hamstring injury before the start of the tournament.
He played no part in Portugal’s opener in Qatar – a 3-2 win over Ghana – but was rewarded with a starting spot against Uruguay.
Portugal largely controlled the proceedings in the first half, however, the best chance went to Uruguay.
It happened through a labyrinthine run through the heart of the Portuguese midfield and Rodrigo Bentancur’s defense has only Diogo Costa.
However, the Tottenham midfielder could only hit the Portuguese keeper directly.
