Porsche recalls 911 for windshields that can detach in the event of an accident

Porsche has recalled more than 8,000 911s because the front and rear windshields could detach in a crash.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 8,101 Porsche 911s from 2020 to 2024 are potentially affected, although the documents do not specify which versions are affected. The problem lies with the glue used to glue car windshields and rear windows, or rather the circumstances in which it was used. It appears that some 911s did not have completely residue-free surfaces at the time of factory installation. This can result in a weaker adhesive bond.

Porsche discovered the problem last November thanks to “optically deficient windows in the field.” An inspection revealed that the glass could partially detach in these most fragile areas. In the event of an accident, the overall bond may be too weak to hold the windshield in place. We probably don’t need to say this, but generally speaking, broken glass is not a good thing.

Recall documents note 15 warranty claims for 911s with “cloudy surfaces or other optical defects,” but no cases of loose glass have been observed. Porsche says it is not aware of any glass that has come loose and there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Porsche says excessive wind noise or humidity in the car could indicate problem areas. This solution is simple: the front and rear windows will be inspected and replaced if necessary, using new glass treated with an abrasive cleaning process.

Notification of the recall to dealers begins March 13 and notification to customers is scheduled for April 26. Porsche says affected 911 owners can contact Porsche customer service at 800-767-7243 and reference recall number ARA3. Owners can also go to the NHTSA recall site and enter their VIN.
