Thanks to a leaked presentation found on Automarket.com, we have a clear overview of the future plans of the Volkswagen Audi Group. The biggest news is the upcoming arrival of an electric Audi Q5 and a Porsche Macan, which will give VAG greater segmentation of the electric vehicle market.
Based on the slideshow, we see an electric Audi Q5 and a Porsche Macan will debut in 2022 alongside the retro-inspired VW ID Buzz van. These new models target one of the most important market segments for modern car manufacturers who understand that strong SUV sales are necessary to be successful in today’s automotive market. This high volume segment is the perfect opportunity for Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche to increase their market share in electric vehicles.
The growing supply of electric vehicles from Audi and Porsche is a direct response to the increased pressure on emissions from the new legislation and to atone for the Dieselgate emissions scandal. While the discovery of deceptive diesel engines was a big blow to the company, it allowed VAG to pursue EVs more aggressively.
My favorite part of the slideshow is at the start of the presentation on page 4. This graphic shows how modern car manufacturers are setting their priorities and will determine which vehicles we can consume. It also shows the future of many automotive related activities that we love such as motorsport. We can clearly see that VAG is working hard to meet emissions regulations as a priority and then changes its future aspirations to grow its product portfolio.
Based on this same graph, we can clearly see that motorsports and internal combustion engines, rated ICE, are a thing of the past and have low priority. This graph is certainly very similar to that of other automakers, as we are seeing one of the biggest paradigm shifts in the industry. All resources are now devoted to producing low-emission transmissions, and any unnecessary costs like motorsport are not among the long-term goals.
