PENFIELD, N.Y. (WROC) — Congratulations to Mrs. Laura Swanson, our first Golden Apple Award winner of the 2023-2024 school year.
This is Swanson’s 20th year teaching and the day we surprised her, she was dressed for “Superhero Day.”
“She is simply magical in the way she teaches students. There is singing, laughing and smiling and the way she manages the class and prepares them for the rest of their school journey is incredible. I am so thrilled that our children had Mrs. Swanson,” says Kelly Horowitz. She is one of the parents who nominated Ms. Swanson for this award.
Rhian Wilson also nominated her. “She is simply incredible. She literally looks like a Disney princess. She is just wonderful and the kids really enjoyed the class and they loved going every day, so she really deserves this.
Natalie Horowitz had Ms. Swanson as her teacher last year in kindergarten. “She was really kind and helped a lot of people,” she said.
Ellie Wilson was also in her class last year. “She was just a great teacher and she was always nice to us and gave us good compliments. »
The students and their mothers helped us with the surprise.
“I am so touched. We have a truly special school and community. I feel so loved and supported by all the families and children,” says Laura Swanson.
But it was the support she gave her students during a particularly difficult year last year that set her apart from the rest. Last year, the class lost a classmate. “It was devastating for the class. They were all good friends of his. She did a great job handling that and all those sad feelings,” Wilson says.
“It really made me think about leading with my heart. These are things you don’t learn in college and don’t think about as a mother and a teacher,” Swanson says.
