Polyplastics highlights DURANEX® in the polybutylene terephthalate class for high-voltage automotive applications

TOKYO, March 6, 2020 / PRNewswire / – The Polyplastics Group offers an improved class of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) providing better tracking resistance for a range of high-voltage automotive components. DURANEX® PBT CG7030 is a class with 30% glass filling which also provides strong dimensional stability and extremely stable electrical resistance with dielectric breaking properties.

The automotive industry is undergoing major changes where electrification is becoming increasingly important because of worldwide efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels and limit emissions. As automakers are increasingly moving towards electric vehicles, the demand for high-voltage components is expected to increase. Polyplastics has carried out comprehensive tests on both PA66 (polyamide) and PBT with temperature environments ranging from -40 C to 140 C for electric vehicle applications such as batteries, power supply control units (PCU) and motors and generators.

Since the properties of the PBT classes undergo little change even in hot and humid environments, polyplastics are determined to be better suited than PA66 for use in high voltage applications. These results suggest that the use of PBT could generate less variation in electrical properties when environments change.

DURANEX® PBT CG7030 has highly superior dimensional stability. Polyplastics reports that the rates of both moisture penetration and dimensional change for PBT classes are around one-tenth of the values observed on PA66-GF33%.

The test results are also seen as DURANEX® PBT CG7030 maintains its resistance to dielectric breakdown under high heat and humidity environments 85 C / 85% RH beyond 1000 hours). A significant decrease of around 40% is effectively observed for PA66-GF33% with high heat and high humidity conditions.

DURANEX® PBT CG7030 also has better volume resistivity compared to PA66-GF33% which exhibits significant decreases in high heat and high humidity environments.
