Manchester City Council today approved plans for a new £ 350million indoor arena who could host boxing in the future.
The American firm Oak View Group (OVG) has submitted a request for the construction of an “Eastlands Arena” with a capacity of 23,500 people next to the Etihad stadium and has today obtained the green light to proceed .
If completed as planned, the new arena would be the largest in the UK, surpassing the current Manchester Arena (AO Arena), which has a capacity of 21,000.
The expected completion date of the project is 2023.
Boxing, tennis, and e-sports are all target events to host on-site along with obvious music concerts.
It could be an ideal arena to host big boxing matches during the winter months, when outdoor stadiums are no longer feasible.
Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury have already fought at the existing Manchester Arena.
