PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Taylor Swift’s new double album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” has been out for a week now.
Swifties around the world listened to every lyric and shared their verdicts, including students in college classrooms.
Carnegie Mellon University offers a three-credit course dedicated to the record-breaking music star. The students’ midterm project was to make predictions about his highly anticipated album, and some of those predictions came true.
In the student-led course titled Taylor Swift: Through the Eras, students delve into each album, analyzing its lyrics, music videos and love life.
“I just hope people appreciate Taylor Swift more by taking the class,” said CMU senior Brenna Slomsky, who teaches the class.
Slomsky said they usually make predictions for the final project, but she moved it up halfway through when Swift announced her new album.
“A lot of people predicted it would be a sad, breakup album, which I think is true,” she said.
Indeed, Swift took fans on a heartbreaking journey with her 16 new songs. And that’s not the only thing CMU students predicted correctly.
“One of my students actually predicted that the album would be a double, which she was really excited about when it came true. So that was pretty cool for her,” Slomsky said.
Other Swifties were shocked by the transformation into a secret 31-song double album.
Slomsky and his students are now searching for puzzle pieces in the dead of night, because first-class Swifties don’t think Swift is done with this album yet.
“With a lot of her previous albums that she’s released recently, she’s been on late night talk shows or doing different interviews after releasing an album, and this time she hasn’t really done anything yet” , Slomsky said. “We think that maybe that means she might still release something else. And when she released the first music video, she announced that the song from ‘Fortnight’ would be the first single. So, I think that a lot of students and I think that maybe because she said it was the first, that there would also be a second or third single, maybe with some music videos.”
