Piers Morgan insists Cristiano Ronaldo is still the GOAT and suggests Lionel Messi could be FOURTH on his list despite World Cup heroics for Argentina

Despite Lionel Messi’s sublime efforts for Argentina, Piers Morgan remained convinced that Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest footballer of all time.

Messi rolled back the years and gave a masterclass to help send Argentina to the World Cup final on Tuesday.

Messi shined again for Argentina

The iconic striker scored a penalty and produced an assist as Man City’s Julian Alvarez netted twice in a 3-0 win over Croatia.

Many have suggested that Messi’s heroism on the world’s biggest stage should cement his place as the greatest footballer in history.

Morgan is a longtime admirer of Ronaldo, however, having first interviewed him in 2019 and then again earlier this year.

This explosive conversation led to Ronaldo parting ways with Manchester United – and the Portuguese star had a 2022 World Cup to forget after being dropped by his nation ahead of their quarter-final exit.

Former England international Gary Lineker tweeted shortly after Argentina’s victory against Croatia: “Is there still a debate? Ask for a goat.

Morgan quickly provided a answer: ” There are not any. It’s Ronaldo.”

But Ronaldo is still held in high regard by Morgan

He then moved on to Tweeter a list of players he considers the best and in doing so made a huge statement about Messi.

The TalkTV host claimed Argentina legend Diego Maradona and Brazil icon Ronaldo could both rank above Messi.

Morgan added: “I think Cristiano Ronaldo is the best ever, [Diego] Maradona 2nd, Messi 3rd (maybe 4th in fact, behind R9).

At 35 and 37 respectively, Messi and Ronaldo could contest their last World Cups, with the famous trophy eluding them both so far.

Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi has scored five goals in the tournament so far, leveling him with Frenchman Kylian Mbappe as co-top scorer.

He is now set to feature in the second World Cup final of his career, while five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo crashed out after scoring once.

The debate will most likely go on for years to come, but it looks like Morgan shows no signs of changing as he continues to hail Ronaldo as the best ever.
