A photo of Taylor Swift and Greta Gerwig has sparked collaboration rumors between the two, with the singer and director spotted out for dinner.
The duo dined at Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria in New York, alongside colleagues Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz. Fans were delighted by the news, with social media users pleading for barbie filmmaker and singer to work together on a project.
“Imagine Taylor in a Greta Gerwig movie,” said Dynasty on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter.
“I’m going to pass out,” @lovrmore joked.
“She is preparing for Barbie2,” wrote @chaiamet.
Another user, Aryan, hoped Gerwig would direct a Taylor Swift music video, while Alex called a potential collaboration “crazy.”
“This is a win for all independent girls,” Ron commented.
News week has contacted Taylor Swift and Greta Gerwig for comment via email.
Swift is currently midway through her record-breaking Eras tour, which kicked off in March and will continue until November 23, 2024 after adding a second leg in the United States due to unprecedented demand.
Spanning five continents, the tour increased the 33-year-old’s net worth by $200 million, pushing her toward billionaire status, and could become the highest-grossing stadium tour of all time.
The opening concert in Glendale, Arizona, was the most attended concert by a female artist in the United States, with 69,000 people in attendance, 6,000 more than previous record holder Madonna. More than 2 million tickets for the tour were sold on the first day alone, according to Ticketmaster, a feat no other artist has yet achieved.
It’s also been an impressive summer for Gerwig, with barbie make box office history. After hitting theaters on July 21, the film, which stars Margot Robbie as the iconic doll, grossed over $1 billion in just 17 days.
Only 53 films have crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office, including barbie join people like Avatar ($2.924 billion), Endgame Avengers ($2.799 billion) and Titanic ($2.265 billion) on the list.
Swift and Gerwig would be a force to be reckoned with, although both would have a full workload. The pop star is re-recording her first six albums, which she created while under contract with Big Machine Records.
The label owned the rights to the masters of Taylor Swift (2006), Intrepid (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014) and Reputation (2017). When music mogul Scooter Braun purchased the label in 2019, he also purchased the rights to her work, leading Swift to record the “Taylor versions” of the tracks.
However, Swift is reportedly working on a first feature film with Searchlight Pictures, with an original script designed by the singer herself. She has previously won two Best Directing awards at the MTV Video Video Music Awards (VMA) for her work on Too good: the short film And The man-the only solo artist to ever do so.
Gerwig is currently writing and directing two films for Netflix based on Chronicles of Narnia CS Lewis book series. The streaming service hopes the project will launch a new television and film universe, although it is still in the development phase.
