Tommy Fleetwood shot a 67 under three to open a one-in-five lead at the Honda Classic before Sunday’s final in Palm Beach.
The 29-year-old Englishman had a birdie in four of the last six holes – putts over 40 feet on the 14th and 17th – to lead the American Brendan Steele.
The English Lee Westwood and Luke Donald are both behind Steele.
Westwood, 46, and Donald, 42, both had a 71 in a Saturday in difficult conditions.
Fleetwood, ranked 12th in the world, is aiming for its first victory on the PGA Tour, after having recorded five victories on the European Tour.
His round, which included six birdies and three bogeys, was only outclassed by Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, four under the 66, while American Jason Dufner posted the only round without bogey of the day.
The trio were among only 11 players in the field of 69 men who finished the third round under par.
“It’s funny, really, how difficult some shots can be,” said Fleetwood.
“There are so many factors on a golf course. You can only hit the golf shots and see where they play.”
In his 45-foot putt on the 14th, he added, “I was just trying to delay it closely. I didn’t expect it to come in, so it was a bit of a bonus.
“At 17, again, a bonus in there, just to get into it.”
Westwood, who is aiming for a first PGA Tour victory since 2010, hit three bogeys and two birdies in the first seven holes, then scored another birdie on the 12th before striking with a bogey on the 16th.
“I didn’t have my A-Game,” said the former world number one. “I had a little trouble with my game, but I was patient and I rectified it. I don’t think I did too much damage.”
