PewDiePie has announced a big change to their YouTube channel, inspired by Corpse Husband, Dream and a growing trend among popular streamers on Twitch and YouTube. After a two-week hiatus from YouTube, the platform’s most popular content creator is back. In preparation for his comeback, the king of YouTube has launched a “big reveal”. Following that tease, today PewDiePie released a new YouTube video titled “I’m Back With A Huge Announcement”. And as you can imagine, video is already all the rage with almost two million views. Of course, every download of PewDiePie generates wild engagement, but this video, in particular, gets special attention for the aforementioned ad.
For those who haven’t seen the video, PewDiePie takes a page from Dream’s playbook, Corpse Husband, Pokimane, and other streamers and YouTubers and will now hide their identity behind an avatar. According to PewDiePie, he dumps his camera face to face and does the “reverse face reveal” to stay relevant.
“I realized that the only way for me to stay relevant at this point … I have to do it,” PewDiePie clearly joked. “Corpse Husband … no face camera, no face revealed, massively popular. Dream … no face camera, no face revealed, massively popular.
As of yet, the YouTuber hasn’t decided on a final avatar, but for most of the video he used a temporary one, or more specifically the avatar below:
For now, it remains to be seen how permanent this change will be. In the video, PewDiePie asks fans for help finding and choosing an avatar, suggesting at the very least that the above avatar won’t be around for long. Again, it’s hard to measure how long PewDiePie will go on. In the video, he’s clearly joking and maybe poking fun at the trend, but it also looks like he’s going to be keeping the avatar on at least for a little while.
