YouTube has announced that a new version of the app will arrive to Roku users within the next week. It will look pretty much the same, but you will now see a shortcut in the menu to access the YouTube TV app.
Basically, it’s a workaround for YouTube TV users to keep watching YouTube TV on Roku, after Roku removed the app earlier this week.
This is a pretty mean gesture on Google’s part. After all, it’s Google’s fault that the YouTube TV app was removed from the platform this week. Like Google has asked Roku to do some things it hasn’t seen replicated on other platforms. Like adding a dedicated search results row for YouTube to Roku’s own smart TV interface. Additionally, Roku should prefer YouTube Music results from voice commands performed with the Roku remote, while the YouTube app is open. This would override the user’s choice to have a different default music service on their Roku device. Among others.
Basically, Google wanted Roku to make Google and YouTube products more prevalent on its platform. And Roku had none of it. As is not the case on other platforms. Even on Google’s own platform, on Android TV.
Google is still working, supposedly with Roku on a deal
According to the email sent to YouTube TV and Roku customers today, Google says they’re still working with Roku on a deal to bring YouTube TV back to the platform.
Remember, those who downloaded the app before the contract expired earlier this week still have access to YouTube TV on their Roku. So if you’ve ever watched YouTube TV on your Roku device, you’re good to go. At least for now. Things could change in the coming weeks, however. You also have the option to always broadcast, and you can find more information about that here.
