Pep Guardiola claims Manchester City ‘couldn’t afford’ to sign a striker during the summer transfer window.
The Spaniard made the claim despite spending £ 123million to bring in Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres.
The Citizens are without a recognized attacker and in good form with Sergio Aguero who suffers another setback from injury to join Gabriel Jesus on the sidelines.
Guardiola admits he watched a new leader in the summer transfer window, but reportedly hasn’t been able to bring back any of his potential goals due to financial fears.
“We thought about it, we thought of a different kind of striker but we couldn’t,” he said, ahead of the Champions League clash against Marseille on Tuesday night – live on talkSPORT.
“If you decide to buy a forward it has to be a forward in Gabriel and Sergio’s league, but we can’t afford that. This is the reality.
“We were like, ‘Okay, Sergio is back’ and we weren’t expecting Gabriel to be hurt, but sometimes it does.”
City’s top scorer Aguero suffered a muscle injury during Saturday’s game at West Ham.
The Argentine was only playing his third game since recovering from knee surgery he underwent in June.
He could now be out for a month and it seems unlikely that he will be available for City’s clash against champions Liverpool on November 8.
“It depends on the injury,” Guardiola said.
“When it’s the minimum, it will be 10 to 15 days. If it is longer, it will be three weeks to a month. I do not know.”
Man City also have Fernandinho, Benjamin Mendy and Nathan Ake, while Aymeric Laporte and Kevin De Bruyne have struggled to stay in shape in recent weeks.
Guardiola added: “We are no exception compared to other teams in Europe. We are on the same schedule.
“Now it’s recovery, preparation, recovery and preparation, recovery and preparation.
“We don’t have time to practice a lot. Everyone has the stats – in the Premier League we have 47% more muscle injuries than at the same time last season.
“It’s not just about City, it’s about everyone.
“If people can think about that and the guys can protect the players it will be good for the future, if we don’t it will increase.
“Now we have to protect the players as well as possible. The strongest will survive, the others will fall. “
