NEW YORK, April 17, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Peloton (NASDAQ: PTON) cares deeply about the safety of its members and one of its core values is Putting Members First. The company is troubled by the one-sided Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) press release regarding Peloton Tread + as it is inaccurate and misleading. There is no reason to stop using the Tread +, as long as all warnings and safety instructions are followed. Children under the age of 16 should never use Tread + and members should keep children, pets and objects away from Tread + at all times.
Peloton was shocked and devastated to learn in March that a child had died using the Tread +. Less than a day after hearing this news, Peloton informed the CPSC. While preparing his report to the CPSC, Peloton learned through a doctor’s report to the CPSC’s public database that a child had suffered a brain injury. Platoon spoke to the family who reported this and the child is expected to make a full recovery. Not wanting to delay in notifying the members, the March 18, 2021, Co-founder and CEO of Peloton John foley sent an urgent reminder directly to Tread + members to follow the critical warnings and safety instructions that accompany the Tread +, which states that children, pets and objects should be kept away from the Tread + at any time. Members were also reminded to remove the safety key and store it out of the reach of children when an adult is not using the Tread +. As hoped, this message received wide attention, further reinforcing this vital safety message. Following this message, Peloton received additional reports of incidents that had occurred previously. Peloton promptly reported the additional incidents to the CPSC and provided any further details requested by the CPSC, with the limited exception of some personally identifiable information that a few members explicitly asked Peloton not to volunteer. In order to protect the privacy of these members, Peloton honored these requests and did not provide this information to the CPSC until it was compelled by subpoena to do so.
The importance of following Peloton’s warnings and safety instructions is made clear in the video the CPSC included in its one-sided press release. In particular, Peloton asks members to remove the security key when the Tread + is not in use, precisely to avoid the type of incident described in this video. When the security key is detached as shown, the Tread + cannot be turned on. The Tread + includes safety warnings and instructions in several places, including in the owner’s manual, in a safety card left on top of the Tread + tray upon delivery, and on the product itself.
Since receipt of March 18 Message from Peloton, members also shared other ways to protect children during home workouts. They schedule workouts during naps or at night when the kids are sleeping. Or they have a spouse or partner watch the children in another room. Some tell the company they use a baby gate to keep children, pets, and items away from their fitness equipment.
Peloton will continue to innovate in member safety. Classes now include additional safety messages from our instructors reminding members to keep children, pets and objects away from the Tread + during workouts and to remove the safety key and put it away out of reach of children after finishing training so that children cannot activate the device. .
While Peloton knows that the Tread + is safe for the home when used in accordance with warnings and safety instructions, the company is committed to taking all necessary and appropriate steps to further educate members of the potential risks. and remind them of the steps they need to take to protect themselves and others in their homes. Peloton will also continue to work to develop cutting-edge safety features for connected home exercise equipment.
Peloton invited the CPSC to make a joint announcement on the danger of not following the warnings and safety instructions provided with the Tread +, and Foley asked to meet with the CPSC directly. The CPSC unfairly characterized Peloton’s efforts to collaborate and correct inaccuracies in the CPSC press release as an attempt to delay. It couldn’t be further from the truth. The company has already urged Members to follow all warnings and safety instructions. Platoon is disappointed that despite his offers of collaboration, and despite the Tread + complying with all applicable safety standards, the CPSC was unwilling to engage in meaningful discussions with Peloton before issuing its inaccurate and misleading press release.
Peloton remains open to working with CPSC to ensure members are safe and have the opportunity to live healthier and more fulfilled lives through the use of Peloton products.
