Pearson of Porter-Gaud and Brown of North Charleston lead basketball teams from across the country – Charleston Post Courier

Selecting the best of the best basketball players in the Lowcountry has not been an easy task this year. Several players have created seasons worthy of consideration in the ranks of boys and girls.

In the end, the two players who stood out led their respective teams to the state playoff semi-finals, “led” being the keyword. These players – North Charleston boys ‘goalie Darjawuan “Doggie” Brown and Porter-Gaud girls’ goalkeeper Elise Pearson – did so and were named Basketball Player of the Year by The Post and Courier’s All-Lowcountry.

Brown and Pearson were the undisputed leaders of their respective teams, not only this season but for several campaigns during their careers.

Pearson has guided Porter-Gaud to the bottom four in the AAA SCISA class in each of the past two years. She finished her career with more than 1,200 points, although she is only limited to nine games in second year due to an ankle injury.

This season was by far the best in all statistical categories. The 5-9 guard has averaged 20.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game in their last year.

“She has put us on the back for the past two years,” said Porter-Gaud coach Kevin Ziman.

Pearson, while clearly the star of the show, was quick to point out the importance of his teammates this season.

“Their selflessness allowed me to have a great senior year and I will always remember it,” she said. “We have daughters who are stars in other sports, such as football and athletics. They didn’t have to play basketball but they made a lot of sacrifices to be there. The trip with my teammates was great this year. I have the impression that we have gone as far as possible. “

Pearson is expected to sign with College of Charleston this month, depending on the severity and duration of the Lowcountry coronavirus outbreak. She spends her free time at school training and staying in shape. She looks forward to the next level of play.

“I am so excited about the whole university experience, from basketball to academics to encouragement for other sports,” said Pearson. “I hope things get better and that we can start on time. I can’t wait to take the next step. “

Brown, who has been part of the reconstruction process in North Charleston for the past four years, is leaving the program as one of the greatest of all time. He guided the Cougars to the AAA Lower State class final this season, averaging 22.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.0 interceptions and 3.9 assists.

Brown leaves with lots of good memories but also with some regrets.

“We thought we had a team good enough to win a state championship this year, so it’s a bit disappointing,” said Brown, who ended his career with more than 1,800 points.

“We had a great year. Every two years, we were eliminated in the second round, so we certainly had a good year. We have accomplished a lot together. “

Brown is currently awaiting his ACT scores before making a decision regarding the university. It has received considerable interest from schools such as the Appalachian State, Mercer, South Carolina and Gardner-Webb. He understands that the next level of play will require even more concentration.

“I will miss North Charleston and my teammates, but I can’t wait to take it to the next level,” he said. “In addition to winning a state championship, I did everything I could in high school. I want to continue growing as a player and the college will help me do that.
