Paul Scholes appears to have taken a dig at Manchester United wingers for their role in the Manchester derby defeat.
The Red Devils were beaten 6-3 by rivals Manchester City, and former midfielder Scholes expressed his thoughts on the result in an Instagram post.
Posting a photo of his former teammates David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, Scholes wrote: “Does anyone remember when wingers used to help their full-backs?
Immediately fans read the former star’s post as a dig at Jadon Sancho and Antony, who starred in the day’s derby loss.
Both Beckham and Giggs helped form Ferguson’s Trophy-winning squads, often playing together as United wingers between 1992 and 2003.
And it’s fair to suggest Scholes won’t be alone in thinking Sancho and Antony could have done more to help their side’s full-backs on Sunday afternoon.
Tyrell Malacia and Diogo Dalot were poorly exposed at the Etihad, as seen by Man United losing 4-0 after 43 minutes and the pair picking up yellow cards as they tried to stop City’s threat.
Malacia was brought in at half-time for Luke Shaw, but Man United then conceded two more goals as Phil Foden and Erling Haaland completed their hat-tricks.
Many of City’s attacks throughout the clash came from the flanks.
And it’s clear Scholes felt sorry for Man United’s current crop of defenders, citing how much Becks and Giggs have helped Gary Neville and Denis Irwin.
Scholes played more than 700 times for United between 1993 and 2013, winning 11 Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, two Champions Leagues and two League Cups, among other honours.
Man United were unstoppable during his time at the club, with iconic manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm.
However, since Ferguson’s departure in 2013, the Red Devils haven’t won the league, while Man City have dominated and gone from strength to strength.
Scholes isn’t the only one to slam Man United for their derby day capitulation either.
Former Man United star Roy Keane also gave a scathing assessment of the Red Devils, calling them ‘troublesome’.
