Patrick Mahomes saw some playing time Saturday when the Kansas City Chiefs took on the Chicago Bears in the team’s first preseason game. Playing quarterback is often touched, but simulating an actual game experience is something Mahomes has been looking forward to.
Being Mahomes’ first game since the Chiefs’ loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship in January, it was his first opportunity to be hit by an opposing defense.
Before the match, Mahomes said he was happy to be hit, but he only asked to be hit once.
“Yeah, I like getting in there and I like getting hit like once,” he said. “Once you’ve been hit once, you kind of see what it’s like to be hit again as a quarterback. I feel like after that, you’re ready to leave.”
Mahomes got his wish, and more, when he was hit by Chicago defensive lineman Trevis Gipson.

After the match, Mahomes discussed the tackle to his stomach, noting it was a tough blow.
“I got hit pretty hard. I wanted that first hit and got hit hard. It caught me right in the stomach, right between the chest pads, so that was a good first to take and that’s fine with me. make it better for sure,” Mahomes told reporters.
Mahomes says he is happy to have gained the experience of the game and is looking on the bright side, that every shot will make him a better player.
When asked if he shouldn’t have wished he had been hit after being hit so hard, Mahomes replied: “No, that was a good drive and I’m glad we took him out and we got that touchdown.”
He added: “I was hoping I was going to get hit and just fell, right to the side. Not the helmet straight to my stomach and then it lands on top of me.”
Mahomes played a drive in the 19-14 loss to the Bears. but his only drive resulted in a touchdown.
