Manchester United aren’t ‘too good to fail’ this season, according to someone who knows that better than anyone.
Willie Morgan, captain of the Red Devils when they were relegated in 1974, spoke of Erik ten Hag’s team compared to the team he led, saying “they’re not as good as us “.
These days, United made a shocking start to the Premier League season with a loss to Brighton followed by a crushing 4-0 loss to Brentford at the weekend.
With the disharmony in the squad and the anger in the stands following ownership of the Glazer family, United are far from a happy side and according to Morgan this is what worries them for the coming season.
Speaking to The Sun, Morgan said: “They say no one is too good to fall and that old adage certainly applies to today’s group of players.
“Warning bells need to be ringing around Old Trafford because we went down and we were a better team than this lot now.
“We had better players, a unity that bonded us and a real camaraderie, but we still managed.
“We made the mistake of thinking we were too good to fall at the start, but we were unlucky with injuries and a lot of bad luck.
“The current batch is really pathetic – they’re not as good as us, so they’ll be praying that Lady Luck doesn’t turn against them.
“The club is drifting dangerously in the wrong direction and that must be down to the owners and the people they appoint to management positions.
“The Glazers are clearly only in it for the money and know nothing about football
“The Glazers are clearly only in it for the money, unlike the owners of City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle who are in it for the power and the glory.
“They may be happy that the club is making money for them, but they keep making bad decisions and that means they keep appointing the wrong people to key positions.
“The Glazers clearly don’t know anything about football. If they didn’t know why the club would get rid of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and bring in Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis.
“And then they make it worse by hiring someone who looks more like a below average teacher than a football manager.
“He doesn’t look like a manager in any way. He has no idea. He has no authority.
“It surprised me because when he arrived and told them he didn’t want Rangnick, I thought that showed he was serious.
“It was a promising start but he should have gone further and cleared the roster of at least ten players to make room for the kids to liven things up.
“But the way he plays with
Cristiano Ronaldo is a joke. I don’t blame Ronaldo for not wanting to play with this shower.
“When he wanted out, they should have gotten rid of straight away. It’s a terrible mess and Ronaldo’s situation is creating chaos.
Worst of all, Morgan says Old Trafford is no longer the same stronghold it once was, saying: “Old Trafford’s fear factor is no longer there, but current players can take a big step forward to bring back the good old days against the old enemy.
“That should concentrate minds and get the most out of the underdogs. I hope they get back on track for the sake of the fans.
“If we went down, God forbid, I don’t think we’d be back for a while.”
