Why the Packers can cover

Green Bay is resting veteran starters, but the Packers still have plenty of talented players who should appear. This is headlined by first-round defenseman Quay Walker and the bulk of the team’s starting offensive line. Green Bay outplayed its opponents in the preseason, holding advantages in yards per play and total yards in both competitions, and Kansas City lost both head-to-head battles on a per-game basis.

Green Bay won’t have Aaron Rodgers, but Jordan Love is more than capable of stepping in and, once the substitutes take the field, the Packers could have the advantage. Love has extensive preseason experience, and the former first-round pick threw for 411 yards and two touchdowns in a 2021 regular-season start. Green Bay is also looking to assess wide receivers, with Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson showcasing a rising talent that could give Rodgers more options when the lights come on.

Why the Chiefs can cover

Kansas City knew at the start of the week that Green Bay wouldn’t play its main starters, headlining Rodgers. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is more coy about revealing his plans, but Kansas City played its key players for two series in the 2021 preseason finale. That included Patrick Mahomes, who shone in the pre -season 2022.

The former MVP finished in the NFL’s top five in passing yards and passing touchdowns last season, and Mahomes had three drives during the preseason, all of which ended in passing touchdowns. He also threw a pair of touchdown passes in the 2021 preseason finale, and Mahomes’ presence is a key advantage. Additionally, the Chiefs are dashing on defense, allowing less than 17 points per game in the last 12 games of last year. Kansas City could also benefit from Green Bay quarterbacks’ ball safety issues.
