Over 100 cars crash in Denver due to first snow and blocked roads

It’s snow season in Colorado. Unfortunately, the first snowfall in Denver was catastrophic, causing a huge pile-up of cars, the Denver Police Department said in a social media post.

Police say about 100 motorists were involved in the massive car crash caused by slippery roads due to the first snowfall, which saw the Denver metro area receive 2 to 5 inches of snow overnight.

The piling on Sixth Avenue caused road closures on the eastbound and westbound lanes from N. Kalamath Street to N. Federal Boulevard.

The police tweeted:

Inoperable vehicles or vehicles where motorists have been taken to hospital are towed to Lot C at Empower Field. Officers are working to clear a path for other motorists involved to leave. We appreciate everyone’s patience.

In another social media post, Denver police said the snowstorm wasn’t the worst they’ve seen so far. However, he managed to make the roads smooth in the Denver metro area. Police are advising motorists to slow down and allow extra travel time due to weather conditions and heavy traffic caused by the massive pileup.

The accidents were not isolated on Sixth Avenue. According The Meteorological Society, icy roads caused several other accidents in the city. Multi-vehicle crashes were reported elsewhere, closing the Interstate 25 North ramp to US Highway 36 and a section of Central Park Boulevard.

Denver police have already declared a Crash Alert in the city, reminding motorists involved to call for help only if someone is injured or the injury is unknown; the wreckage blocks the streets; City property, vehicles or personnel are involved; an involved driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol; or a driver fails to provide proof of insurance or driver’s license.
