Snoop, the border collie featured in the Best Picture nominee Anatomy of a falland monster figurines from Godzilla: Minus Onenominated for best visual effects, competed for the attention of stars, including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Emma Pierre, Bradley Cooper And Robert Downey Jr. at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon.
As is tradition, the gathering of nominees from the 23 Oscar categories – accompanied by their loved ones, members of the Academy’s Board of Governors and a handful of journalists also present in the room – took place in the hall International Ball at the Beverly Hilton. Unlike Oscar night itself, nominees tend to feel less nervous at the luncheon, where they are deliberately seated with nominees from other categories and films, and each leaves with a winner. President of the Academy Janet Yang welcomed attendees to “an awards season highlight.” To the oohs and ahhs, she reminded that the 96th Academy Awards on March 10 would begin an hour earlier than usual, at 4 p.m. PST, and that daylight saving time would go into effect the same day, which which means people should check their clocks. She also urged potential winners on Oscar night to limit their speeches to just 45 seconds, which for groups sharing a win can only be used by one designated person.
This year’s nominees range from Oppenheimer sound mixer Kevin O’Connellin his 22nd nomination (which also made the sound this year for barbiethat is to say the full Barbenheimerand assured me that Oscar nominee lunches never look like old hat), Christine Vachonnominated for the first time for producing Past lives. Nominees also include a current Academy governor Jean Tsien (co-director of the nominated short documentary Island in between) and two former governors of the Academy Laura Karpman (American fictionthe composer) and Mark Johnson (Leftovers‘producer).
After a vegetarian lunch was served, videos were shown showing a number of candidates reacting to the announcement of their nomination several weeks ago, including American fictionIt is Sterling K. Brown, barbieIt is America Ferrera And Flamin’ HotIt is Diane Warren. And then producer DeVon Franklin, vice-president of the Academy, read the names of all the nominees. To my ear, for whatever it’s worth, the loudest ovations in the room went to barbieIt’s Robbie and Gerwig, Oppenheimer‘s Downey (whose name was last called) and Nolan and Leftovers‘ Paul Giamatti. Also receiving loud applause: Gladstone, Stone, Brown, Anatomy of a fallIt is Sandra Huller, barbieis Ferrera and Billie Eilish, OppenheimerIt is Emilie Blunt, Flower Moon KillersIt is Martin Scorsese, MaestroIt is Steven Spielberg And Poor things‘ Marc Ruffalo.
