Oscar de la Renta creators Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim were all smiles on the red carpet of Fashion Group International’s annual “Night of Stars” gala, held in Cipriani South Street at Casa Cipriani.
The designer duo, who also creatively run contemporary brand Monse, will receive the Fashion Vanguard Awards from Nicky and Kathy Hilton tonight. The Hiltons have been close friends of the Oscar de la Renta brand for years, making this moment even more special for Garcia and Kim.
The creators have always cherished Kathy Hilton’s sense of humor, which they applauded while watching her recent role in “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”.
“We are so proud! We are so proud of her. I think she manages with lightness, grace and humor, but with a lot of heart, that’s what [we] really fell in love with them for, ”Garcia said.
Most recently, Oscar also made headlines for dressing Billie Eilish at the 2021 Met Gala in September. However, the singer would not partner with the brand for the event unless its fur production is phased out. “I think it was just something we had in mind,” Garcia said of the phasing out of fur in the Oscar de la Renta house. “She was the catalyst, so to speak. It was just something we couldn’t wait to do at some point, and when she brought up the conversation, we just agreed to move on.
Kim agreed, adding how “it is important for a young artist like her to stand up for what she believes and what is good for the world.”
The Met Gala was one of Eilish’s most viral fashion moments to date, where she wore an Oscar de la Renta nude dress with a full bodice and voluminous tulle skirt. This was due to the fact that the musician’s outfit was a far cry from her matching oversized tops, pants and hats. Although Garcia remembers the evening as “an overwhelming night, to say the least,” he says the “hugging” Eilish “really wanted to be corseted nine.”
In fact, Eilish’s dress was particularly meaningful as it was a time of growth for her, according to the creators.
“What I love about Billie is that she likes to challenge herself, and at this point in her career and in her life, she felt like she hadn’t tried this look, that she didn’t have tried this type of dress, ”Garcia recalls. “She likes to be challenged and pushed to grow.”
“And she enjoyed every moment, which is so nice to work with,” Kim said.
This year, the Fashion Group’s international “Night of the Stars” gala is the event’s first in-person gala since 2019. In the presence of around 300 people, the “Evolutionary” themed evening, created in partnership with Lanvin, will feature a performance by the ballroom group “La Maison Xclusive-Lanvin.” In addition, awards will be given to various prominent figures in the fields of fashion and beauty, including Tommy Hilfiger, Norma Kamali, Fausto Puglisi, Law Roach, Gabriela Hearst, Ronnie Fieg, Raja Rajamannar and Augustinus Bader.
