Cognizant will implement a digital platform designed to monitor and forecast emissions in real time, and help develop its new ESG data strategy, reporting and governance model

TEANECK, NJ, February 5, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Cognizant has extended its relationship with Orica, a leading manufacturer of commercial explosives and innovative blasting systems, to provide an ESG data strategy and digital platform, through agile methods, that delivers Real-time reports and forecasts of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The project is a key part of Orica’s Net Zero strategy, in particular its AUD 37 million ($27 million) Kooragang Island Decarbonization Project.

Under the agreement, Cognizant will leverage Orica’s existing technology investments, in particular its Microsoft Azure data lake, and provide Orica with a unique ESG data platform. This platform is expected to capture and maintain Orica’s GHG emissions data, including structured, unstructured, and real-time data, for the purpose of enabling Orica to monitor, report, and forecast its emissions reductions. emissions and track the origin of Australian carbon credit units.

“There is a growing, market-driven need for large organizations in the resource sector to understand, report on and reduce their carbon footprint. As a major supplier to mining and construction companies, Orica also has an important role to play in reducing global greenhouse gases. emissions,” said Chris Crozier, Chief Information Officer, Orica. “As such, we needed a trusted partner with a similar focus on ESG objectives and sustainability and one with expertise in data analytics, AI, design and IoT. We look forward to working with Cognizant to help us achieve our own sustainability goals, while we look for ways to help our customers achieve their own goals.”

“At the heart of our company’s goal of designing modern enterprises to improve everyday life is our commitment to integrating sustainability into our thinking, decisions and actions. A growing number of customers, investors, regulators and government agencies now expect companies to make measurable progress in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions,” said jonathan smith, Chief Sustainability Officer, ANZ, Cognizant. “To do this, these companies will need to transform their product and technology strategies, supply chains, logistics models, etc. Data is a crucial factor that allows companies to analyze their current emissions and measure themselves against the ESG goals over time, and we’re incredibly proud to have been named Orica’s data, AI and analytics partner so we can measure Orica’s ESG efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.”

Orica has installed catalyst reduction technology at its nitric acid production plant on Kooragang Island, predicting a significant reduction in GHG emissions, particularly nitrous oxide. The Kooragang Island Decarbonization Initiative is expected to deliver cumulative emission reductions of 4.7 million tonnes of CO2e by 2030. The cumulative reduction expected from this project has been calculated to be equivalent to 1% of australia annual carbon footprint, or, on an annual basis, avoid GHG emissions produced by the equivalent of 35,000 to 50,000 Australian households.

Orica has already engaged Cognizant to move its IT infrastructure to the cloud to enable Orica to achieve higher levels of efficiency, agility and business impact and to optimize operating costs.
