One baby among at least five killed as tornadoes ravage US

A four-month-old baby is among five people killed after dozens of tornadoes swept through the central United States.

Authorities said at least 100 people were injured in Oklahoma, where four of five people died, as extreme weather flattened buildings, ripped off roofs and threw vehicles onto the streets.

Destruction was widespread in Sulfur, a rural town of about 5,000, as experts said nearly 40 tornadoes carved their way through central areas over the weekend.

It comes after extreme weather left a trail of destruction in other central areas Friday.

Authorities have confirmed that a man has died from injuries suffered in Iowa following a tornado in Pottawattamie County.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt was in Sulfur surveying the damage when he declared a state of emergency in 12 counties.

“You just can’t believe the destruction. It seems like every business downtown has been destroyed,” he said.

“It’s certainly the biggest damage since I’ve been governor.”

He said about 30 people were injured in Sulfur, some of whom were at a bar when the tornado struck, while thousands of residents were left without power.

President Joe Biden has offered the full support of the federal government to help with recovery efforts, the White House said in a statement.

Storm warnings for high winds, heavy rain and hail were issued Sunday by the National Weather Service (NWS) for more than 47 million people across much of the United States, from the eastern Texas to Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin.

The NWS reported 38 possible tornadoes struck the Central Belt, with Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri experiencing the worst weather.

At one point, more than seven million people were under tornado warnings.

Authorities said the tornado in Sulfur started in a city park before sweeping through the city, overturning cars and ripping roofs and walls off buildings.

Sulfur resident Kelly Trussell said, “How do you rebuild it? It’s total devastation. It’s crazy, you want to help, but where do you start?”
