Joe Cole has insisted Chelsea have no obligation to sell Olivier Giroud in January and is adamant the Frenchman could have a big role to play in what will be a “ successful year ” for the Blues.
The World Cup winner appeared nailed to leave the West London club last season after finding his first-team chances limited due to Tammy Abraham’s sparkling form.
However, he scored eight goals in 11 appearances towards the end of the campaign to help Chelsea seal the Champions League qualification and gain renewed prominence in Lampard’s plans.
But once again, his first-team minutes are limited due to the summer arrival of Timo Werner, and reports suggest he is awaiting a move in January.
Nonetheless, Stamford Bridge icon Cole believes Giroud is ‘extremely important’ to Lampard and has insisted his former teammate should not be pressured to sell him in January.
“I think Giroud was of a different class and is an extremely important part of the team,” said Cole.
“Frank would love to keep him and Chelsea are in a position where if they don’t want him to go he doesn’t have to go because he signed a contract.
“He will have a big role to play in what will be a successful year for Chelsea.”
Chelsea fought a scoreless stalemate with Tottenham on Sunday, with Abraham missing out on a few good opportunities to break the crosses stalemate.
And Cole has defenseman Abraham saying that every good striker misses chances and praising his good form so far this campaign.
“Tammy has been excellent,” added the former Liverpool player. “He offers something different from the other guys.
“It is important to have competition for places. He won’t be the first striker to miss a few chances.
