Olivia Rodrigo is back at the top of the Billboard 200 chart this week. The young singer-songwriter dominates the ranking of the most consumed albums and EPs in the United States with her latest album, Gut. As the track opens at number one, Rodrigo matches a feat achieved by one of the most popular musicians in the world today.
Gut marks Rodrigo’s second No. 1 and second consecutive topping the Billboard 200, but that’s not what makes his recent victory historic. Rodrigo debuted his first two albums at number one on the chart, no easy task and one that only a once-in-a-generation voice can accomplish.
Two years ago, Rodrigo scored his first Billboard 200 title with Sour, his first album. This set opened at #1 with ease, as did Gut did. Billboard notes that Rodrigo is the first woman to debut her first two albums at number one on the chart since Ariana Grande.
THE Wicked the actress and singer made her name on the Billboard 200 with her debut album, Your humble servantwhich debuted at No. 1 in 2013. A year later, Grande returned to the top with My everything. Since then, she has reached No. 1 with five of her six albums, with only Dangerous woman failing to reach the maximum position. This song went to #2 and stayed there.
Gut comes in at No. 1 this week with 302,000 equivalent album units. This amount is greater than Sour, which launched to the top of the Billboard 200 with 295,000 copies sold. Rodrigo’s 300,000+ week is made up of 150,000 pure sales and almost exactly that many equivalent units from streaming. The songs on Gut racked up just under 200 million streams last week.
