An old video clip of Karylle and Heart Evangelista performing in TELL goes viral online.
TELL is the late GMA-7 Sunday noon show, broadcast from 1997 to 2010.
On April 8, 2020, Twitter user @vicentejian uploaded the clip to his account in response to a Twitter thread launched by netizen @AltABSCBN on “memorable showbiz ebena philippine”.
The video is a clip of TELL in 2008 showing Karylle singing the new Pinoy version of Beyonce’s song, “Irreplaceable”.
The Pinoy version uses the title “Disposable” and was originally recorded by an anonymous group of girls and rappers.
The first original verse of “Irreplaceable” says: “Left, left / Everything you have in the box on the left.”
The Philippine lyrics, which Karylle interpreted, say: “Kaliwa, kaliwa / Umiiyak ang puso at ikaw ang may gawa.”
The chorus was also translated into Tagalog, but more as a direct translation of the lyrics in English.
The last part of the chorus reads: “Wala kang kwentang lalake / Mahilig kang mambabae / Anong akala mo sa akin, Marijuana / Pagkatapos mong gamitin iiwanan na disposable”
His original lyrics in English are:
“You must not know me / You must not know me / I can have another you by tomorrow / So don’t think for a second / You are irreplaceable”
Heart then went on stage and sang the English chorus of “Irreplaceable”, while Karylle sang the words of the tagalog.
At the time of this writing, the Twitter video clip already has more than 600,000 views, 5,000 retweets and 28.6,000 retweets.
The original YouTube video of Karylle and Heart’s performance was posted in July 2008.
It shows Heart opening the representation with the English version of “Irreplaceable”.
After Heart finishes the first chorus, Karylle enters the scene and sings the Tagalog version.
The two girls finish the production number with a duo of the English and Tagalog versions of the song by Beyonce.
At the time, Heart had just moved to GMA-7 after being an ABS-CBN talent. Heart remains a Kapuso talent until today.
Meanwhile, Karylle left GMA-7 in November 2008, just months after TELL performance.
REACTIONS OF NETIZENS TO THE “DISPOSABLE” VIDEO CLIP
Karylle and Heart’s TELL performances were quickly picked up by internet users.
Most comments made fun of the “marijuana” part of the lyrics in the Tagalog version:
Some netizens have said that they “stan” Karylle and gave her titles like “Queen of Translation” and “Queen of breakup songz!”
One user has commented that Beyonce can rest now and be replaced by queens Karylle and Heart!
Some have described this performance by Karylle and Heart as iconic.
