Listeners can’t let go of 2020: Music released last year by Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa tops the 2021 most-listened lists on iHeartRadio, the country’s largest radio network.
Grande was the radio network’s most-played artist in 2021, collecting 2.6 billion turns and streams, according to a statement from iHeartRadio.
Lipa’s hit “Levitating” was the most played song of the year on the network, with 1.2 billion plays alone, making Lipa the second most played artist.
After “Levitating”, the top 5 songs listened to on iHeartRadio were “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd, “34 + 35” by Grande, “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat and Sza and “Montero (Call Me By) by Lil Nas X Your name). ”
Olivia Rodrigo was the only artist to have two songs in the top 10 most played songs: “good 4 u” ranked seventh and her first ballad “drivers license” ranked 10th.
Behind Grande and Lipa, the 10 most listened to artists were The Weeknd, Rodrigo, Pop Smoke, Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, Luke Combs, Ed Sheeran and Luke Bryan.
Grande and Lipa’s 2021 success on iHeartRadio is a testament to their long-standing audience. Grande released her album posts in October 2020 and Lipa released her album Nostalgia for the future in March 2020. Lipa’s album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2021 Grammy Awards and won Best Pop Vocal Album. Her song “Don’t Start Now” from the album was nominated for Recording of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Much of the success of “Levitating” outside of iHeartRadio has been due to TikTok. After its performance at the 2020 Grammys, the song went viral on the video-sharing app, prompting it to reach No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May, more than a year after the song’s initial release.
