Navajo Nation officials say an oil spill was prevented from reaching a tributary of the San Juan River and cleanup work continues at Standing Redrock Creek.

They say the Capitol Operating Group had a release from a corroded pipeline between the saltwater reservoir and an injection well located in Red Valley on August 7.

Up to 80 barrels of salt water were released.

Tribal officials say the brine water contained oil, brine and salt water and the release traveled more than three miles through an unnamed drainage to Standing Redrock Creek.

Tribal officials say remediation is expected to continue next week and includes pipeline replacement, treatment of the unnamed discharge site and drainage, and collection of contaminated soil from the creek bed.
