North Macedonia is the brave underdog of Euro 2020 in hopes of causing upheaval and they came very close to Ukraine on Thursday.
Led by veteran Goran Pandev, older than his country, the minnows performed brilliantly against the Ukrainian team, losing 2-1.
But it was their odd pre-kickoff warm-up routine that caught everyone’s attention – and definitely got a sports day vibe at school.
The North Macedonian players rushed onto the pitch in pairs with a ball in an overturned cone.
After reaching the end, the pairs tossed the balls into the air and tried to catch up, before returning to the starting line.
On the pitch, North Macedonia may have been unlucky not to come away with a match point.
It looked like it would be a rout with Ukraine creating a lot of opportunities.
West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko gave them the lead after 29 minutes before Roman Yaremchuk doubled up five minutes later.
Pandev thought he got one back, only for VAR to declare it offside and correctly.
North Macedonia scored a deserved goal thanks to Ezgjan Alioski. Pandev was knocked down in the box and the Leeds midfielder missed the shot on goal.
He then followed the rebound to bring the score to 2-1.
Ukraine missed a great opportunity to conclude the result by missing a penalty.
A VAR review spotted a free kick handball that resulted in a free kick.
But it didn’t matter in the end as they held on to claim the three points.
