Lando Norris has apologized on social media for the “stupid and reckless” comments made during the Portuguese Grand Prix weekend about his Formula 1 peers Lewis Hamilton and Lance Stroll.
Norris struck at Stroll after their early clash in Sunday’s race in Portimao which left the McLaren driver with damage, putting an end to his hopes of scoring points.
This follows a similar incident between Stroll and Max Verstappen during practice, which prompted Norris to say after the race: “He obviously didn’t learn from Friday, but he doesn’t seem to learn with anything.
“It happens a lot, so I just have to make sure I stay away.”
Norris had initially apologized over the team’s radio during the recovery lap about the profanity he used about Stroll in reaction to the incident.
“I apologize for what I said about Lance, I shouldn’t have said the words I said, but just in the moment I was bored,” he said. .
Norris was later asked about his compatriot Hamilton’s record 92nd win following Sunday’s race, but was criticized on social media for his comments.
“I’m happy for him, nothing more,” Norris said. “It really doesn’t mean anything to me. He’s in a car that should win every race. He has to beat one or two other drivers, that’s all.
“Fair play with him, he always does the job he needs to do, but yeah, just another win for him.”
In a message posted to Twitter on Tuesday, Norris offered a general apology for his comments.
“I owe an apology,” Norris wrote.
“I’ve been dumb and reckless with some of the things I’ve said recently in the media and in interviews, and haven’t shown the respect I should have towards certain people.
“I’m not that kind of person, so please know that I should apologize to them, but also to everyone reading / listening. Sorry.”
Norris finished 13th in Portimao following a clash with Stroll which left him “just trying to survive”.
“I was on my own for a lot of the race,” said Norris, after racing to third in the opening stages.
“We had a lot of trouble with the wind at the start, then I had a puncture which forced me to box again at the second stop.
“Then in the last stint we were quick and had a good pace, but we were just too far behind what we should have been.
“It’s a shame we could have scored points today, but it just wasn’t the case.”
