Check out the Red Band trailer for No strong emotions below…
With Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) and Andrew Barth Feldman (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), No strong emotions is set in Montauk, New York, and follows Lawrence as the unlucky Uber driver, Maddie. On the verge of losing her childhood home, Maddie discovers an intriguing job offer: wealthy helicopter parents looking for someone to “date” their introverted 19-year-old son, Percy, before he’s not leaving for college. In exchange for a Buick Regal, she agrees to become their son’s “girlfriend” and help him join adult life. But, much to her surprise, Maddie soon discovers that clumsy Percy isn’t a sure thing.
Directed by Gene Stupnitsky (Bad teacher, good boys) and a screenplay written by Stupnitsky and John Phillips, No strong emotions stars Jennifer Lawrence and Andrew Barth Feldman alongside Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Producers), Laura Benanti (Life & Beth, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), Natalie Morales (Parks and recreation), Scott MacArthur (Virtuous Gemstones), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (the bear), Hassan Minhaj (The daily show) and Kyle Mooney (Brigsby Bear).
No Grudges Is the ‘Funniest Script’ Jennifer Lawrence Has Ever Read
The plot behind No strong emotions is certainly somewhat questionable, and many wonder why an A-lister of Lawrence’s caliber was drawn to the steamy comedy project. Well, that’s probably because the script is the “funniest” she’s ever read. “Gene read me the Craigslist ad and I died laughing,” said Lawrence, director Gene Stupnitsky’s longtime friend. “I thought it was hilarious, but there was no script or anything. I just thought he had a funny idea. And then a few years later he told me handed out the funniest screenplay I’ve ever read in my life.”
But, posting a project that has no connection to a well-known IP or franchise can be risky these days. Something that goes double for a spicy comedy. And Lawrence and Stupnitsky are well aware of the obstacles involved. “A theatrical release these days is, uh…” Lawrence said to bring No strong emotions on the big screen. “It’s a test. You are tested publicly and everyone knows if you pass,” Stupnitsky added at the time. “But,” Lawrence continued, unfazed by the potential challenges ahead, “I feel like we’re doing our best.”
No strong emotions is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 23, 2023 by Sony Pictures Releasing.
