Nissan Rogue Sport will be phased out next year: report

Nissan is enjoying decent demand for its high-performance machines, but it looks like someone in the portfolio could be retiring very soon. The aging Rogue Sport is expected to be out of production by the end of this year with no direct replacement on the expected horizon. Nissan has already informed its dealers that the crossover will be discontinued.

Automotive News quotes a memo sent to Nissan dealerships, which includes the information that production of the Rogue Sport will cease in December of this year. The model will remain available for a few more months until dealer stock is cleared early next year. The automaker will provide parts support through 2033. The Kicks and Rogue will effectively replace the Rogue Sport in the lineup.

“With the newly redesigned all-new Rogue and Kicks, we’ll continue to cover that part of [the] effectively in the market,” said Scott Shirley, vice president of Nissan, in the letter sent to dealers. “We are also able to invest more resources in the current life cycle of our vehicles and in the products of new generation.”

The Rogue Sport was launched in the United States in 2017 as a slightly modified version of the European Nissan Qashqai. Positioned below the Rogue, it was a more affordable and smaller SUV alternative, but when the Kicks was launched it all but wiped out much of the Rogue Sport’s sales with its youthful personality, nearly as spacious interior and lower price.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Nissan has launched an all-new generation Qashqai in 2021. It’s slightly larger than its predecessor and features a new engine range, including a new hybrid powertrain. At the time, it was thought that the new Qashqai would turn into the second-generation Rogue Sport, but it seems those assumptions were wrong.

The larger Rogue has recently been revamped on a new platform and packed with lots of new technology. Last year it was also upgraded with a new three-cylinder engine. The Kicks, Nissan’s entry-level crossover in America, is expected to be redesigned in 2024.
