Nissan recalls 125,000 Rogue SUVs over potential fire hazard

Nissan will recall 125,215 units of the 2017 Rogue in the United States to fix an issue that could be a fire hazard. The campaign is tied to a January 2022 recall to fix the same issue for 664,779 units of the Rogue from 2014 to 2016.

The newly recalled Rogues have production dates of July 26, 2016 through September 27, 2017. The problem is that water can leak onto a wiring harness in the driver’s floor, which could cause corrosion. This could cause a fire. The problem can also lead to power window or power seat failures on the driver’s side. The AWD light may also come on.

“Nissan is not aware of any accidents, injuries or thermal events related to this issue,” the automaker told Motor1.com.

To resolve the issue, dealers will inspect the affected wiring harness for corrosion. If there are, technicians will replace the necessary components. The process will also include applying lithium grease to the connectors to prevent future moisture intrusion.

Nissan will begin notifying potentially affected owners in January 2023.

In the initial recall, Nissan believed the tape on the harness was leaking water and causing corrosion, according to the timeline. The 2017 Rogue didn’t have this stripe, so the automaker thought the issue didn’t affect it.

Transport Canada, the national counterpart to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States, found an example of wire harness corrosion in a 2017 Rogue. Nissan investigated the issue from February to August 2022.

Nissan submitted a vehicle audit to Transport Canada in 2022. The company found four examples of 2017 Rogues with corrosion in the wiring harness – two in the United States and two in Canada. An analysis of warranty claims showed evidence of nine additional vehicles with the problem. The company initiated the recall.
