Nicole brings heavy rain and tornadoes to the Carolinas as it moves northeast
JOSE, THANK YOU. WELL, NOW ON TO THE DAMAGES CAUSED BY NICOLE. WATCH THIS NEW LUCIA COUNTY VIDEO. EROSION IS SO SIGNIFICANT IN CERTAIN REGIONS THAT SOME HOUSES WILL HAVE TO BE CONDEMNED. PARTS OF A1A HAD TO BE CLOSED BECAUSE THE ROAD COLLAPSED INTO THE OCEAN. THIS STORM LEAVING A PATH OF DESTRUCTION ALONG THE EAST FLORIDA COAST AND DOZENS OF BUILDINGS ALONG THE COAST AT RISK OF COLLAPSE. THIS IS OUR POOL DECK. WE HAVE THESE SKI CABINS THERE. THIS IS OUR POOL. LOT OF CHAIRS AND CHAIRS, WHICH WE HAVE JUST PAINTED AND REDONE DAMAGE FOR ME. AND WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE WHEN IT COLLAPSED? IT WAS LIKE A SEMI-TRUCK HITTING THE WALL. IT WAS ABNORMALLY LOW. IT’S JUST INCREDIBLE. LIKE, I HAVE BEEN ON THIS SOUTH FLORIDA COAST HERE ALL MY LIFE, 48 YEARS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING CLOSE TO DISTANCE. NICOLE LANDS SOUTH OF VERO BEACH AS A CATEGORY 1 HURRICANE INVOLUTION COUNTY. 49 BUILDINGS HAVE NOW BEEN DETERMINED DANGEROUS, SAFE, INCLUDING TWO DOZEN HOTELS AND CONDOS. THIS STORM STRUCK AREAS STILL RECOVERING FROM HURRICANE IAN, WHICH ROCKED OUR STATE’S WEST COAST JUST SIX WEEKS AGO. THEN MADE ITS WAY ON THE EAST COAST. THE FORECAST IN GEORGIA IS NOW ON HIGH ALERT AS NICOLE MOVES IN. THEY WARN OF POSSIBLE TORNADOES AND DOWNED TREES TODAY. AND IN BREVARD COUNTY, OFFICIALS ARE TRYING TO DETERMINE HOW TO FIX SIGNIFICANT EROSION ALONG ITS COASTLINE. THIS IS WHAT MANY OWNERS HAVE TREATMENT. I MEAN, LOOK AT THIS. COUNTY OFFICERS SAY THEIR BEACH is shrinking as damage to sand and dunes increases. HOWEVER, THEY SAY THEY ARE SO HAPPY THE COMMUNITY IS SAFE. MEANWHILE, CREWS ON THE TREASURE COAST ARE STILL ASSESSING HURRICANE DAMAGE. GOOD. CALIFANO IS IN ST. LUCIA COUNTY WHERE BEACHES WILL SLOWLY REOPEN TODAY. AND IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE HOW BEAUTIFUL THE BEACHES ARE TODAY IN FORT PIERCE, ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO WHAT WE HAVE SEEN WITH HURRICANE NICOLE. MOST BEACHES AND PARKS IN ST. LUCIA COUNTY ARE NOW BACK OPEN TODAY. HOWEVER, THERE ARE STILL SOME THAT WILL BE CLOSED OVER THE WEEKEND. THESE BEACHES AND PARKS ARE NORTH CAUSEWAY ISLAND PARK, WHITE CITY PARK, WALTON ROCKS, BEACH AND FAIR WINDS GOLF COURSE. THEY STILL WAIT FOR THE FLOOD WATERS AROUND THESE AREAS TO BREAK. THIS MORNING PEOPLE IN FORT PIERCE ENJOY THE OPEN BEACHES. WE TALKED TO A MAN WHO IS HAPPY TO BE BACK TO HIS ROUTINE. NOW YOU SEE IT’S BACK TO NORMAL. AND HE IS VERY HAPPY. AH, DEFINITELY. YES. ENJOY THE MORNING LIKE NOTHING HAS EVER HAPPENED NOW. YESTERDAY AS THE SUN RISED WE GOT A BETTER LOOK AT THE DAMAGE TO OTHER PARTS OF THE TREASURE COAST IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY. MANY BEACHES STILL REMAIN CLOSED AFTER MAJOR EROSION, INCLUDING JAYCEE PARK AT VERO BEACH DOWN IN MARTIN COUNTY AND HUNDREDS AT BATHTUB BEACH ISLAND. THE STORM SURGE IMPACTED MANY HOMES IN THE AREA. THIS HOUSE HAS LOST THE ENTIRE FLOOR OF ITS GARAGE. HERE IN ST. LUCIA COUNTY, TEAMS ARE STILL WORKING HARD ON A SMOOTH PART OF INDIAN RIVER DRIVE WHICH WAS Swept Away DURING THE STORM. OFFICIALS TELL US THEY SHOULD HAVE COMPLETED THIS WITHIN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS. FOR NOW, HERE IN FORT PIERCE, CALEB CALIFANO, WPBF, 25 NEWS OFFICIALS ON PALM BEACH ALSO HOPE TO REOPEN BEACHES TODAY. THEY WERE CLOSED YESTERDAY DUE TO HIGH SURF. THE ISLAND DID NOT HAVE ANY SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE BUT THERE WERE A FEW TRAFFIC SIGNALS THAT WERE IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA. THE TEAMS ALSO HAD TO CLEAN DOWN THE FALLEN POWER LINES. FLORIDA POWER AND LIGHT WORKS 24/7 TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE HAVE ELECTRICITY. AND AT ONE TIME YESTERDAY, AT LEAST 20,000 CUSTOMERS IN OUR FIVE COUNTIES HAD NO ELECTRICITY. JUST IN THE LAST HOUR, ALL POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY, ST.LUCIA COUNTY, STILL SITTING WITH APPROXIMATELY 70 PEOPLE WITHOUT POWER. AGAIN, POWER, FLORIDA, POWER AND LIGHT. THEY ARE FULLY CONSCIOUS AND WORKING TO RESTORE THAT POWER. THE FPL HEAD TEAM IS READY TO RETURN POWER QUICKLY. SHORTLY AFTER THE STORM LANDED NEAR VERO BEACH. WE AWAIT ANOTHER UPDATE FROM FPL ON THE RESTORATION EFFORT
