In recent years, the NFL has made several attempts to spice up the Pro Bowl, changing the venue of the game from Hawaii to Florida to Las Vegas. Last year’s Pro Bowl included several rule changes hoping to pique the interest of fans. Despite these changes, the League All-Star Game struggled to gain traction, as players and fans alike would apparently rather do anything than watch a half-speed game without any stakes.
The NFL is currently discussing ways to improve Pro Bowl week, including possibly eliminating traditional play, according to NFL media. The league is looking for alternative ways to showcase the NFL’s best players. With the exception of 2020 (due to COVID-19), the Pro Bowl has been played every year since 1950.

And while the game garnered fan interest, the ratings have plummeted in recent years. Fewer than 7 million people tuned in to watch last year’s Pro Bowl, a 41-35 victory for the AFC.
If the league does away with traditional play, it will be interesting to see what alternative options are announced by the league. The NFL may also make changes to the annual report Pro Bowl Skills Challengewhich usually takes place during match week.
