Apple will release the latest version of the Apple operating system, iOS 13.4, next week, it seems. There have already been hints about what’s to come – including one of the coolest new features on any smartphone – and some fixes for the current software.

Now it looks like there will be a radically different way to recover the operating system if your iPhone starts playing, as MacRumors spotted.

Operating system recovery: what is it exactly?

This is when your iPhone malfunctions and you have to take the nuclear option, restoring the firmware to overcome any problem that is bothering your device.

New OS Recovery: how does it work?

Well, right now, to sort your iPhone (or iPad), you need to connect it to a Mac or PC in order to restore the firmware. It is not always appropriate. After all, assuming you don’t have a computer, like many iPhone owners don’t. And since Apple encourages us all to think of the iPad as a suitable alternative to a laptop, there is something slightly curious about connecting a laptop substitute to a laptop in case of a problem.

New recovery of the operating system: so what changes?

It seems that the iPhone and iPad will suddenly be freed from the tyranny of connecting to a computer. The key phrase here is live. This means that restoring the iPhone could happen by connecting it to the Internet and downloading the operating system from there.

Something similar is already happening with the Mac, where you can set a restore process in action from your iMac or MacBook keyboard and the appropriate software is downloaded from the Internet to give your computer a fresh start in the life.

To add this functionality to an iPhone or iPad, it would be very useful to create a new option of last resort.

New recovery of the operating system: will live streaming be the only way to do it?

There will be no complete clarity on this until the final version of the software is made public, but it also appears that you can establish a physical connection to restore the operating system.

However, it will not be the same as it is now, as it suggests that it will happen via a connection to an iPad or another iPhone, for example. Convenient if you are a household with two iPhones and without a computer.

New operating system recovery: how will it work?

Maybe the way it works on the Mac gives us a clue. To restore the software on a Mac, you restart the computer while holding down the Command, Option, and R keys. This tells the Mac that you want to restore it and once connected to the Internet, via Wi-Fi in the case of the Mac, it downloads and installs the right operating system as efficiently as if you had connected a USB drive with the software corresponding.

Here, once you’ve invoked the recovery tool, it would be as simple as hitting the Connect button on the screen and following the instructions below.

New OS recovery: will that happen?

The fact that it appears in a beta version of the software suggests that this will happen – although it doesn’t necessarily appear as of iOS 13.4. There have been rumors that the next Apple iPhone, probably called iPhone SE2 or probably but less likely, the iPhone 9 could play a role in this development.

This is because some people say that the new iPhone will be without connector, that is to say that there will be no Lightning or USB-C socket, and that the charging will be done wirelessly.

Personally, I think it’s nonsense. Until wireless charging becomes much more common, I don’t think Apple would remove a normal charging plug. And, anyway, even right now the best wireless charge is much slower than wired.

But that does not mean that this new operating system recovery system will not happen. It’s just a matter of timing.
