Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes could exploit Premier League loophole with red card against Tottenham

Bruno Guimaraes could benefit from a crazy Premier League lapse if he is sent off against Tottenham on Saturday.

The Newcastle midfielder heads into Saturday’s St James’ Park clash with nine yellow cards and faces a two-match ban.

Elite rules state that any player will receive a two-match suspension if they are booked ten times in the first 32 matches.

And with Newcastle set to play their 32nd league game, this represents the last chance for Guimaraes to receive an unwanted ban.

But incredibly, if the Brazilian was sent off following two bookings, he would only be out for one match.

It’s a flaw that recently allowed Anthony Gordon to escape a prolonged suspension following his late sending-off during the Magpies’ 4-3 win over West Ham last month.

The England international received his ninth and tenth yellow cards of the campaign, but due to his dismissal he remained on eight yellow cards.

If Guimaraes received two yellows against Spurs, he would remain on nine and avoid a longer ban.

Depending on the severity of a suspension, he could be ruled out of games with Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.

But the ex-Lyon star has shown great restraint in recent months by stringing together ten matches without finding himself in the referee’s notebook.

After the limit of 32 matches for ten yellow cards, the next threshold is 15 yellows in 38 matches.

This would result in a three-match ban, although no one in the history of the Premier League has accumulated so many bookings.

Guimaraes has been a key player for the Magpies this season, with four goals and seven assists in 43 outings in all competitions.

He made 100 appearances for the Toon during last weekend’s trip to Fulham, where he scored the only goal of the game.
