Dan Ashworth believes Newcastle have laid the foundations for lasting success and have said they are ready to crush the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’.

The Magpies are the richest football club in the world after their £30million takeover from the Saudi Public Investment Fund last year.

After appearing to be relegated in January, Newcastle finished the 2021/22 season in 11th place and have impressed this season.

Eddie Howe’s side currently sit sixth in the table having been beaten just once in their opening nine Premier League games.

And Newcastle director of football Ashworth, who moved to St James’ Park from Brighton in May, outlined his plans for the future.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, he said: “There is no timetable for us but, by aspiration, the club want to compete for trophies and at the top of the Premier League.

“There are a lot of good clubs there, though. You have the top six who have established revenue streams, European funds, teams of 25 players… who have been investing in their club for several years at different levels than we have.

“We have no divine right in one or two transfer windows to say ‘bang, we should be competing with the top four’.

“One of the constraints we have is working within FFP. We can’t buy any player we want and pay them what we want, we have to be creative.

“I don’t think there is a ceiling…but the size and potential of this club is enormous.”

Before adding: “There are a lot of steps to put in place, but the support network and the potential of the club are enormous. I would like to think that we will win a trophy in the next six years.

Arsenal legend Ray Parlor thinks the sky is the limit for Toon’s outfit, insisting they have the finances to rival Manchester United, Liverpool and Man City in years to come.

The former Gunners midfielder told talkSPORT Breakfast: “I think Newcastle are now a very attractive club to get sponsors.

“Arsenal have a lot of sponsors, Man City, Liverpool, Manchester United… now Newcastle will be a pretty attractive club for someone to sponsor.

“You all have different partners and all of a sudden it will give them a bit more income, which may give them more opportunities to go and buy players or keep your best players.

“I’ll be amazed by that, it’s a work in progress for Newcastle, I think it’s going to be a bit like Man City, it’s not going to happen overnight, which it hasn’t.

“But they’re sitting very well in the league, a great result last week (5-1 win over Brentford), I think there’s a real buzz around town now.

“I’m sure everyone is looking forward to what Newcastle will do in a few years.”
