Newcastle have made Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele an “astronomical” offer in an attempt to drive him away from Camp Nou.
France international Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund for £ 97million in 2017, which was then a La Liga record.
The enigmatic winger has failed to justify his price tag in Spain, with a mix of injuries and form seeing him limited to 120 appearances and 30 goals in five seasons.
Newly appointed manager Xavi Hernandez is desperate to keep the still highly rated 24-year-old, but things may be out of their control with Newcastle making a contract offer Barca cannot match.
Reports in Spain claim Dembele will be offered € 15million in salary [over £250,000 per week] and € 15 million [around £12.7m] signing bonus, the Frenchman’s contract due to expire in the summer of 2022.
The Magpies can officially sign Dembele to a pre-contract deal on January 1 ahead of a summer move, and the deal would represent a huge declaration of intent from the club’s new owner.
Newcastle was bought by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund in October, making the club the richest in the world along with the country’s crown prince Mohammad Bin Salman, worth an estimated £ 320 billion.

Conversely, Barcelona are going through a financial crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with club president Joan Laporta claiming their debt stands at £ 1.15 billion.
Mundo Deportivo also reports that Manchester United, another Premier League club, are interested in pursuing Dembele, but Newcastle’s offer could be unmatched.
