NEW ORLEANS, May 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Could your medications cause erectile dysfunction (ED)? Is erectile dysfunction a sign of future health risks? Can lack of sleep cause erectile dysfunction? What is the long-term prognosis after America’s first-ever penis transplant surgery?
New research on erectile dysfunction and penis transplantation presented at the AAU Annual Meeting.
The researchers will present these results from the ED study at 117and American Urological Association (AUA) Annual Scientific Meeting. Petar BajicMD, assistant professor of urology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine in Case Western Reserve Universitywill host a press session featuring the following four abstracts at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans on May 14, 2022to 1 p.m. CT.
Ouday Manndoctor, of University of Manitoba, studied the association between erectile dysfunction and future cardiovascular disease and found that men with erectile dysfunction were at significantly higher risk for major adverse cardiac events (MACE). “Erectile dysfunction is an independent risk factor for major adverse cardiovascular events”
It is well known that erectile dysfunction is a side effect of certain drugs, while its association with other drugs is less recognized. Elie Kaplan-Maransdoctor, from Maimonides Medical Center, used a national pharmacovigilance database to evaluate the drugs most commonly associated with erectile dysfunction, information that men who prescribe these drugs would want to know. “Drugs Most Commonly Associated with Erectile Dysfunction: Evaluation of the Food and Drug Administration’s National Pharmacovigilance Database”
After performing the first successful penis transplant in United States in May 2016, a multidisciplinary team co-led by dr. Curtis Cetrulo, Jr.. and dr. Dicken Ko, of Harvard University and brown university, respectively, for the first time demonstrated observed erectile function physiology and reconstitution of allograft innervation in this five-year patient follow-up. “Erectile function 5 years after a successful penis transplant”
In this broad analysis of national claims, Pranjal Agrawal, a medical student at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, found that various sleep disorders are strongly associated with erectile dysfunction and low testosterone levels. “Sleep Disorders and Sleep Circadian Rhythm Disorders Are Associated with Significantly Higher Rates of Hypogonadism and Erectile Dysfunction – An Analysis of the US Claims Database”
“Erectile dysfunction has important implications for men’s overall health. These studies shed important new light on the causes and potential effects of erectile dysfunction. Not only can the condition have both psychological and physical consequences, the erectile dysfunction also provides critical signals of other serious medical conditions that might otherwise go undetected,” Dr. Bajic said. “Unfortunately, despite the fact that up to 30 million men in the United States are affected by erectile dysfunction, shame, and embarrassment prevent many from discussing the condition with their doctor, causing them to miss opportunities for more effective and preventative care.”
