New Nintendo device after eight years: mainly built with Samsung components

A Nintendo Switch

The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, Japan’s Nintendo’s first new gaming device in eight years, is expected to feature a significant amount of technology from Samsung Electronics. It is expected that a wide range of Samsung products, from displays to memory and foundry services, will be used, making it almost a “made by Samsung” product.

According to industry sources on April 24, Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be launched in the second half of this year. In fact, the parts industry has reportedly reached a considerable degree of agreement on initial production contracts.

Nintendo’s flagship console model, the Nintendo Switch, was launched in 2017 and has sold steadily, helping Nintendo’s market capitalization exceed 10 trillion yen last month.

Bloomberg analyzed that “more than 10 million units of the Nintendo Switch 2 are expected to be sold in its first fiscal year”, which is a scale comparable to last year’s global sales of the Galaxy Folding series.

Notably, Samsung Electronics’ foundry is expected to handle the Nintendo Switch 2’s key processing unit. It is likely that Nvidia’s Tegra T239 chip, manufactured using Samsung’s 7LPH process, will be used. High-value memory will also be manufactured by Samsung Electronics, with fifth-generation V-NAND to be integrated into game cartridges and internal memory.

Key components such as the display would be secured by Samsung, overcoming Chinese competition. In 2021, when Nintendo launched the OLED model of the first Nintendo Switch, it began using panels from Samsung Display.
