New names appear in Illinois basketball transfer portal and recruiting wish list – Writing Illini

Some big pieces of the transfer portal fell into place Thursday, and there are now fewer options for the Illinois basketball team.

I wasn’t too shocked that AJ Storr didn’t choose the Illini. There were rumors that he would go to Kansas, so this decision was not a surprise. I was a little surprised Dante Maddox Jr. didn’t come to Champaign. He ended up choosing Xavier as his landing spot.

However, Illinois still looks good when it comes to new additions. We added four players from the transfer portal, and there are still some solid options. There could even be an additional promotion in 2024 that could come to fruition.

Illinois has done a great job so far in the transfer portal, but adding another wing for depth would be a good idea. This is why I like that the Illini are targeting Koby Brea.

Brea is a 6-foot-6, 205-pound wing from New York. Coming from Monsignor Scanlan High School in the Bronx, Brea has been studied by numerous programs. He was not rated or ranked, but chose Dayton as his landing spot.

In four years with the Flyers, Brea improved his game. Last season, he averaged 11.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. He also started four of the 33 games he played for Dayton in 2023-24.

With just one year left to play, Brea is now looking for a new home. Brea entered the transfer portal, and on Tuesday, Jamie Shaw of On3.com reported that numerous teams have already contacted the talented wing. One of the programs that showed interest was Illinois.

The good thing about Brea is the fact that he can play multiple positions. I could see him getting to the No. 2 or No. 3 spot. He was also an excellent shooter last season, making 6.1 three-pointers per game and hitting them at an insane rate of 49.8%. This kid would be a steal and he would greatly help Illinois’ second rotation.
