The Detroit Lions saw their new uniforms leak on social media, a little earlier than expected. Detroit planned to release the changes later this month, but a Fanatics ad that leaked to a website went viral on social media and featured the new uniforms.

The Lions opted for a much simpler look, an ode to years gone by.

The Lions also appear to be bringing the black alternate uniform back into the rotation for the first time since 2016 (they had a black outline on the jersey, or a black alternate jersey, in their rotation from 2003 to 2016). These jerseys live up to what team president Rod Wood said last month.

“They honor our traditional color with a little update and a twist,” Ford said in March. “And it also gives us a lot more options. We’re going to introduce a few different pant options that can go with the jerseys, so it’ll give us different options to wear during the season.”

The Lions had fun with the Fanatics jersey leak, although they may not have been happy about it. Teams put a lot of time and effort into social media unveiling and photoshoots of their uniforms, only for it to be thwarted by something outside of their control.

The jerseys look significantly better on the players based on Alim McNeill’s appearance. Jared Goff also teased a video of the black alternate uniform, joking that he had to leak it on social media.

The Lions will have three jerseys (home blue, away white and alternate black) according to the leak – but it’s unclear if the gray alternate uniform will return. The alternate blue helmet that debuted last year also has an uncertain future, which will be determined when the Lions decide to officially unveil their uniforms.
