In June of last year, Volkswagen and Ford shared more details on the cooperation announced by the two companies earlier in 2020. Their plans include a number of jointly developed models and what you see in the gallery below could be the first real fruit of their partnership.
Our photographers sent us a batch of pictures showing one of the first mules of the new generation of Ford Transit Custom and its Tourneo Custom variant. Judging by how it looks, you might think it’s just a facelift of the existing model, but the fact that this test car has six lugnuts is a big clue to the new foundation it hides. probably. The current generation Transit Custom has a five-bolt layout and even the larger Transit has five lug nuts.

What else do we see? Not much, honestly, but those little white dots are probably rivets holding up fake body panels attached to the front wheel arches, hood and bumper. Plus, while the front fascia looks quite similar to that of the model still on sale, the headlights seem thinner and slightly narrower.
At a glance, the dimensions of this test vehicle appear unchanged from the current Transit Custom, but there is plenty of room in the wheelhouse, which may suggest that there could be some adjustments to the wheelbase. There is also a second test prototype next to this black bus and it appears to be the cargo model.
From what we know so far, the new Transit Custom will serve as the basis for the new generation Volkswagen Transporter. Before I say that the new T7 is already in development – yes, that’s right, but it will only be available as a passenger vehicle. The freight model will be a revamped and slightly modified version of the new Transit Custom. In turn, Volkswagen will share its new Caddy with Ford, which will sell it under the name Transit Connect. The two smaller vans will be assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.
