We’re about to see the sixth-generation Audi A4. It’s definitely time, as the current model debuted in 2015 for the 2016 model year. Amid sedan sightings, we’ve occasionally seen Avant test vehicles in A4 and S4 versions. This time, instead of taking pictures, our spy team clicked registration for some video footage.
Several prototypes are spotted here, all wearing the same level of camouflage. We don’t see any hard coating underneath, but the placeholder taillights are still in place. A few vehicles have a single-outlet exhaust with two tips, one of which emits a clear four-barrel sound as the driver pulls away. Another test vehicle with dual corner exhaust also makes an appearance. We think it’s an S4 Avant, backed up by bigger black wheels with big brakes behind them. Despite tougher emissions regulations in Europe, our sources think the S4’s turbocharged V6 will carry on, though it could get hybrid assist to add power while reducing throttle nuisance. exhaust. The A4 could remain pure internal combustion, using an updated version of the durable 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder tuned for cleaner emissions. However, some sources say all The next-gen model will have some form of mild-hybrid assist. This also applies to diesel engines, which are expected to return.
As for styling, the exterior will clearly take an evolutionary approach. The headlights will slim down, the grille will widen a bit, but it will still be easily recognizable as an Audi. Inside, you can expect plenty of digital screens, although Audi apparently won’t follow BMW or Mercedes-Benz in incorporating them into one big screen. Recent interior spy photos reveal a central tablet-style touchscreen sitting alone, with another screen relegated to the driver.
Our spy sources are confident that the next-gen A4 in sedan and Avant versions will go on sale in 2023. Whether or not it’s a 2023 model remains to be seen. If we get a debut before the end of the year, which is very possible at this point, it should be a 2023 vehicle. If a reveal is pushed back to the first quarter of next year, you’re probably looking at 2024 models. And no, at this point, there is no indication that Audi will send the new A4 Avant to North America.
