This year, PlayStation is one of the official sponsors of the UEFA Champions League, and the company is celebrating its partnership with the football / soccer competition through some really interesting commercials. At least two of these ads have been shown so far, the first featuring God of the war‘s Kratos and Atreus, and the second with Ratchet and Clank. It’s unclear if there will be more of these commercials, but it’s a good way for PlayStation to promote the partnership, and one that could help educate viewers about the biggest games on the PS5.

The ad with Kratos and Atreus doesn’t show much to the two of them, but the Ratchet and Clank ad is a little more exciting. It shows the pair of heroes coming through a rift to help an injured player off the field. It’s definitely a fun way to highlight the gameplay hook of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart!
While it’s a bit unusual to see PlayStation characters advertising the UEFA Champions League, it’s easy to see why these specific properties were selected. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of the biggest PlayStation 5 exclusives of 2021, and God of War: Ragnarok is one of the most anticipated titles of 2022. The new PlayStation console doesn’t need any help to sell, but it makes sense to see these two games promoted over other proprietary choices.
It’s always interesting to see video game companies finding ways to advertise outside the box! Gamers who grew up during the days of the original PlayStation probably remember a lot of funny commercials showcasing console games (Crash Bandicoot immediately comes to mind). Most video game ads these days are pretty basic, but the Ratchet and Clank ad is fun because it manages to capture the heart of the game while also being tied to the event it is sponsoring. For most viewers this should make it one to remember!
