The Los Angeles Lakers were knocked out in the first round of the NBA Playoffs by the Phoenix Suns after a difficult, grueling and disappointing 2020-21 NBA season. LeBron James and Anthony Davis both missed important time with injuries, but the worst part was that the rest of the roster didn’t step up around them. One of the biggest disappointments was the play of young striker Kyle Kuzma.
In recent years, the Lakers have been willing to bet on Kuzma’s sheer talent. There is no doubt that he has the skills and the ability to become a very good NBA player, especially on the offensive end of the field. Unfortunately, this skill and potential has not yet materialized consistently.
Now it looks like the Lakers might be ready to leave Kuzma. An NBA agent has spoken to the NBA Analysis Network about the Lakers’ plans with Kuzma and it looks like a trade could be on the horizon.
“The Lakers have become frustrated with (Kyle) Kuzma’s inconsistency and will consider trading him in the offseason. Rob Pelinka won’t be moving him on the cheap, but if he can be packed to add better talent around LeBron and AD, they will. Kuzma will be on the commercial block this offseason and many teams are expected to show their interest. “
During the 2020-21 NBA season with the Lakers, Kuzma ended up averaging 12.9 points per game to go along with 6.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists. He shot 44.3% from the ground and knocked down 36.1% of his three-point attempts. These numbers have shown some promise and an improvement over the 2019-20 season.
Any team that needs help on the attacking side of the pitch could take a look at Kuzma. With a bigger role than he had with the Lakers, there’s a good chance he can move up very quickly.
Kuzma is only 25 years old and still has plenty of time to reach her full potential. Maybe a change of scenery could do him some good. Los Angeles knows their championship window is now and if they can pull off another trade to get them closer to another ring with James and Davis in the lead, they have to make that move.
It will be interesting to see what kind of market opens up for Kyle Kuzma this offseason. Many teams could use a young forward with a potential four, which is exactly what the young Lakers brings to the pitch. LA could also bring him back if they don’t get a deal they like.
That being said, the Lakers will be open for business this offseason. They’re not at all happy with a first-round playoff exit and Kuzma could be a victim of this disappointing end to the season.
